Plettenberg Bay, or Bahia Formosa ("beautiful bay") as is was named by the early Portuguese sailors, is an upmarket holiday destination with 12 kilometres (7 miles) of white sandy beaches. The village is perched on red sandstone cliffs that rise above the coastline and the lagoon formed by the Keurbooms and Bitou rivers.

lt is 30 km (19 miles) east of Knysna, a town situated around a sea lagoon on the edge of the ancient indigenous forest of the Garden Route. Elephants have been reintroduced to this area and biking trials are offered. Knysna is famous for its oysterbeds, lagoon cruises and tourist curio and artefact stalls. Attractions include a world heritage site nature reserve (Featherbed Nature Reserve at Knysna) and a marine reserve at Plettenberg Bay where whales and dolphins may be seen from the beach on a regular basis.

Tours are available from Central beach by boat to view these animals close up. Plettenberg Bay also offers a variety of watersports and is a short distance from the Tsitsikamma National Park.

The Town of George only an hours drive by car from Plettenberg bay has a national airport connected to all the major cities of South Africa. Plettenberg Bay has a local airport. All airports are serviced by car rental companies.
